1 Corinthians 15:29 does not command Christians to practice proxy baptism. It describes a practice that non-Christian resurrection deniers were practicing. Even if the mysterious Corinthian practice was similar to LDS baptism for the dead — it wasn't a practice that Christians should practice.

i love to see so many Mormons commenting on these shorts. keep up the good work GLM, they are paying attention. a confident Mormon wouldnt be watching Christian videos.

I think the use of the word THEY shows that Paul was not including himself. whether that church was practicing or another sect outside of that church is somewhat irrelevant, because Pauls' letter is correcting them on the resurrection. In a letter of correction to this church, Paul talks about a behavior and distinguishes we/us from THEY and so HE is correcting them and then distinguishes him/us/we from "they/them".

since there is no teaching on this practice and Paul doesnt endorse the behavior and furthermore seperates himself from those who were, i think its fair to say it was not endorsed by the desciples.

but much of the new testament is letters written to churches correcting their incorrect practices or beliefs. So its possible that this was an act that was addressed somewhere else in person or in a non-canonical letter. But LDS take a mention of it and then draw the conclusions they want to draw and create a doctrine around it.

the dead are not in spirit jail, waiting for spirit missionaries to spread them the mormon religion. LOL. imagine being made to go on a 2 year mission, riding your bike through towns, going door to door, and then dying only to be made to do the same in the after life. LOL. now THAT is hell,... imagine the disappointment...

the last line said it all for me: "Why are you bothering to practice this baptism on behalf of the dead when you don't believe in a future resurrection?"

You are correct, sir. Those who do not believe in the resurrection would have no reason to be baptised on behalf of the dead. So then those that do, would.

Many people have argued about this very scripture and there is no consensus. 1 Peter chapters 3 and 4 do give the precedence that Christ preached the gospel to those who are dead so that they may live.

Baptism for the dead is revealed work that has scriptural precedence. It is one of the most important parts of the Atonement of Christ. It is an essential work. Otherwise Christ is a respecter of persons and cares about some of His children more than others. But guess, what, He cares about all of us the same. Every one of His children will receive multiple opportunities to have the full gospel actually preached to them before His judgement.

As a recent Ex-Mormon, it's my observation that most Mormon interaction with the Bible is cherry-picking random verses that align with Mormon teachings.

If you want to interpret what Paul said, I can do the same: The members in Corinth were not generally doing baptisms because it was done in another location.

Why would Paul use a false practice to prove the resurrection? This makes no sense. He saying very church clearly that day the members of the church are practicing proxy baptism and why are they practicing proxy baptism? Because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Even scholars admit that their early church practiced proxy baptism.

I'm not a Mormon, but I will comment on the subject. As a Discple of Jesus Christ, I believe what was spoken to John the Baptist, the say he baptized Christ. "To fulfill all righteousness, I need to be baptized of thee." Just as baptism was essential for Jesus, it is essential for all the covenant to do His will. Now, the baptism of the dead wasn't new. It was part of ancient temple work in Solomon's temple. This was the Spirit of Elijah in that time. If you study the Old Testament, Malachite wrote of this being restored.
Now my question to the world; where is this promised Restoration of the True Church of Jesus Christ? Where is the Authority of Moses, to gather Israel from the four corners of the world? Where is the Authority of Elias to teach the True Gospel? Where is the Spirit of Elijah to turn the heart of the Father's to the children and the hearts of the children to the fathers? Remember, should the earth be smitten with a curse, the whole world will the wasted. Before we listen to false teacher and doctrine consider the consequences of not knowing the true and living Christ.

I’m not a Mormon, but this is why I have no confidence or trust in ANY Christian apologists. Yes scholars are divided on what this means, but clearly there were SOME Christians who did proxy baptisms.

No ! The grammar (preposition) is hard to translate from Greek. Read the context.

They are worried about Christians who had been baptized, then died before Jesus returned. Paul is telling them not to worry. Their baptism was good, and they will be resurrected !

They thought that Jesus was going to return before they died. 🤦🏻‍

our preaching refers to the teaching of truth that when followed ,the ones that baptize in the name of death and rebirth, when what is alive cannot be made dead ya know eternal life and all but the teaching of eternal life is in vain because there faith is put into haveing to die to gain eternal life but if you preach truth they will say the we misrepersent god , thats to the churches now and current experiences not to anything in the past

I don't really have a dog in this fight, but I don't think I agree with this interpretation. The verse in question is unclear about what's going, so any interpretation has to make things up that are not in the text.

We baptize for the dead because Jesus said that we must be baptized in order to enter the kingdom of heaven, and many pass away without being baptized. If there is no baptism for the dead then the practice itself is meaningless, since not all can receive this essential ordinance.

Please pause and consider the consequences of the doctrine you’re suggesting. There are many who don’t even have the chance to hear Jesus’ name in their lifetime. The Bible and Book of Mormon teach that baptism is essential and one of the ways we receive Christ. You’re saying all who don’t even have a chance will go to hell. That is not a merciful God. That is not even a just God. That is a petty and unjust god and not at all the God of love. Teaching of Christ continues after death and prior to the Day of Judgement, and it is our responsibility to provide proxy baptisms to allow the dead an opportunity to choose Christ.
