The exile of God’s Old Testament people was a consequence of their sin. In Psalm 77 they ask, ‘Has his steadfast love forever ceased? Are his promises at an end for all time?’
Many Christians today face displacement as a consequence of their faithfulness rather than their sin. Questioning and lament are a legitimate part of a Christian’s prayer vocabulary. And although it may seem strange, they are perhaps particularly relevant in the season of Advent with its focus on waiting.
