I don't see smugness or pleasure in his posture or looks, I see him very sincerely inspecting his work, looking over the details to see if it's portraying what he wants. Maybe a little tired, but not exhausted, just invested in what they both have committed so much time to-- the thing we're all looking at right now. It's almost a reflection of the audience, but with that added element of creation. Behind the scenes, before the curtain is raised. There is closeness and affection but the audience is unsure if it is romantic, rather, they're both connected to and committed to the same creation.

When you're an artist, you are NEVER satisfied with your painting, but you love it, even if you say you hate it, deep down, you love it, as if it were your child.
I've never been photographed looking at my paintings, but I guess this is my expression: not smiling, not sad, just deep in thought.
The model isn't smiling either, she looks like she's examining it closely, which in itself is a compliment.
Most people go: "Wow! That's beautiful! You're talented! Anyway, as I was saying, yesterday I went shopping and..."
