The "Happiness Tree"💗
(Albizia julibrissin)
With pink flowers that resemble powder puffs and lacy leaves that rest in prayerful pose in the evening, Mimosa is a dryad enchantress. ✨
Native to central and eastern Asia, mimosa has spread throughout the warmer reaches of the globe, both as an ornamental sidekick to human habitation and as an opportunistic “weed-tree.” The fragrant blooms are impossible to ignore—resembling rose fairy pom-poms—and are in vogue with butterflies and hummingbirds. 🦋
Mimosa, also called silk tree, is a primo permaculture tree, as it is medicinal, nitrogen-fixing, and attractive to an entourage of pollinators throughout its long flowering season. However, please note that mimosa is invasive in some areas - so do a little research before cultivating this one.
Mimosa flowers and bark are used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to treat anxiety, depression, restlessness, and insomnia. It is popularly known as the “tree of happiness” in China.
