The regulating line is a principle that landscape designers use to lay out different spaces in a landscape. But you can try it at home, too!

Landscape designers use the regulating line (also called lines of force or force lines) to organize a space when they're creating it.

So a regulating line is basically taking an existing structure like your house and just drawing straight lines out from significant parts of that house. So the edges of the house, the windows, maybe the door, draw straight lines out from all those spaces.

And that will kind of give you a little bit of a grid to work with so that you can start lining up different spaces in your landscape. You can draw lines straight out from the structure or you can also try at 45 degree angles and use those regulating lines to create your paths and create your rooms outdoors.

And you'll be well on your way to creating that dream landscape.
