Ive seen theories ( i believe) that their was a dark timeline before the traveler where the abyss sibling was successful and the forbidden knowledge was not deleted and consumed all of tavat and Alice went back in time (like raiden in mk9) and helped the traveler find paimon before she died to regain the heavenly principles power to realine the world and protect them from the abyss once and for all

The purpose of the traveler to be a witness, said in like every archon quest heavily since inazuma. Even say inazuma, when the story is they NEED to recruit the traveler, they literally take a back seat. While I’m sure everything would have happened as it did regardless, especially in certain regions, the traveler is a conduit. While our sibling was brought to try at to be used as a conduit for evil with the abyss, we are used as a conduit for peace. We are meant to experience the whole story, a witness to the whole truth, which I imagine in the end will help everyone team up with the fatui and the abyss against the god of principles.

There was always someone else who could have taken the Traveler's place in each archon quest.
Diluc in Mondstadt.
Ganyu in Liyue.
Kazuha in Inazuma.
Cyno in Sumeru.
Navia in Fontaine.
The Traveler hasn't changed fate. This is clear in the Natlan storyline, at least so far.
One day the strings of fate will be yours to reweave.
