OR you could do what they used to do, walk it down with your feet. I got my daughter to walk the cob down because it's far less effort, you apply a lot more pressure with your body weight and you spare yourself the agonising wrist, elbow and shoulder pain of tamping. I only tamped the last course where it was under the roof and around window forms.
Traditionally, communities would get the children to walk the shutters barefoot because they could feel for any voids and squish them out as they went.
Work smart, not hard.
As long as you have some clay in the mix the shrinkage and mass alone will do most of the work.
Wetter mixes settle better than dry.
Rammed earth is inferior to cob.
Straw makes for a far stronger, tougher wall. It will even take screws. And straw feels good under your feet. It releases cellulose in to the mix which acts like a glue. Plus the strength and insulation value of the fibres.
