To me it always felt that Pokey was his name and Porky is his alter ego (when he turns evil)

But after mother 3 he renamed himself Porky to match with the pig theme

I grew up with him being Pokey before the internet was a household thing, but I recently wondered about how Porky would be pronounced in Japanese because of the whole L/R thing, and that's when I found out it's actually how it's pronounced, but spelled as Porky, if going for a 110% purist stance.

I thought he was Pokey for the longest time, but now i do call him Porky considering it's the official name and also because of the funnies. Although I don't really mind either - they both fit his character and personality.

I’m fine with both, but I think I like Pokey more. I feel like this is more his real name, and I thought it was a pun on him being annoying, like he’s “poking” at you. And his brother is Pickey, because, “poke and pick.”
But I think he’s only Porky in Mother 3. To better represent the pig theming, and maybe it’s inspired by a corruption of his name.

i consider his normal state in Earthbound to be "Pokey" but in Mother 3 he is "Porky"

OG Earthbound player here (before Smash Bros. was released, when EB was at its lowest point of popularity) when my brother and I were kids we were one of the just happened to "get it at Walmart for $20 on clearance" (truly an honored few, admittedly by accident/luck) because the box was big and our mom saw the price was cheap. Back then we didn't know any better and the game was goofy and fun (there wasn't anyone to tell you what was good except your friends and Nintendo Power, the internet was just a baby then and my brother and I had none of the above!) Anyway, all that said I often go by what I first saw- when we played the original US release it was Pokey so I've always called him that but I understand the reason for the change. I also always say that I played Earthbound and not Mother 2 (because to me the "Mother" title is reserved for the Japanese version and I don't think of it as interchangeable, it also makes it easy to differentiate between the versions/localizations... I also have always called it "Oh"nett I know I'm annoying, I'm also old... So respect your elders!! ;P)

Porky makes much more sense with his pig theming in mother 3. Plus there is already another Nintendo character named pokey, the cactus enemies from the super Mario series.
