Your lower legs are so much more than just calves. Your lower legs are comprised of the following muscles:
Anterior Compartment:
1. Tibialis Anterior
2. Extensor Hallucis Longus
3. Extensor Digitorum Longus
4. Fibularis Tertius
Lateral Compartment:
5. Fibularis Longus
6. Fibularis Brevis
Posterior Compartment:
7. Tibialis Posterior
8. Flexor Hallucis Longus
9. Flexor Digitorum Longus
10. Gastrocnemius
11. Soleus
12. Plantaris
13. Popliteus
I don’t think there’s a purpose of knowing all 13 muscles by name. But I do think there’s a purpose to knowing the three compartments, and how to train them.
I’ve found all 3 compartments can be safely trained to failure once a week if maintaining, and twice a week to catch up a weak, vulnerable link.
Do you train your ankles?
