Oh nothing changes. In 1812-1818 they were still relying on Forlorn Hopes to try to force a breach in the walls, a tiny group of men against artillery, muskets, rifles and bayonet and saber. Such a waste of life

The Battle of Castillon has to be cited as one of the most important battles in history, not just for its use of gunpowder weapons en masse that had not been seen before at this time, but also for the fact that the use of trench warfare, which had been one of the mainstays of the Roman Army, had been brought back and was a foreshadowing of the bloodbaths of the American Civil War and World War I.

The English won their part of the Hundred Years War with the bow. The French won theirs with the gun. As Petain said during WWI (that was before he ended on the losing side of History) "le feu tue" fire kills.

I wish wars were still like this. Forts with cannons, and only muskets and cannons acting as missiles, with swordsmen, pikemen and many others. No bombs, no nukes, just fighting on a field.
