I would offer a different argument that the problem becomes apparent with humans. Evil is a perception, what is considered evil to one may not be evil to another because of any number external or internal reasons. Now I do not subscribe to religion and I am a firm atheist, however a belief or a dismissal of religion is not the bigger dilemma here. The wider encompassing dilemma is that people do believe it to be real and therefore to them it is unshakable reality. Let's use the god of the Bible as an example, taking the true meaning of what the Bible tells the reader about God- god is described not as a creature in one place but as very existence and life itself, who while is an entity that can be described he is also time and matter and responsible for everything that ever has or ever wil exist. According to the bible nothing ever has or ever will be created without him controlling every single everything about it. And those faithful who who believe and follow this god praise him and worship him and agree his will and decisions are perfect and divine and the right choice because he said so and therefore it is.
That means every child who has ever suffered disease or cancer only to die young, every rape, every brutal murder, every famine, every torture, every person who's burned alive, every single ounce of suffering EVERY SINGLE EVIL that this God decided was how he wanted it- that's all perfectly fine for the followers of god infact, they love it...
God doesn't have to be real, the fact that His worshippers think he is real and worship him anyway gives us the true Problem of evil.
The problem of evil isn't whether god can exist when evil exists. Even if god existed his existing is not the most abhorrent and eye opening dilemma surrounding this issue. The problem of evil is that the evil exists in those who worship this god. What kind of monsters endorse and encourage what we know as evil. The problem is you.
