Training close to failure applies more to intermediate to advanced lifters. When you hit a plateau after training awhile, training close to failure will help overcome that plateau.

New lifters will experience "newbie" gains within the first 4-6 months of training. Therefore, training close to failure as a beginner would be more of a safety concern than a benefit.
