That is not the same situation at all. Civil war didnt have a universal threat to deal with. Quill needed to wait 30 seconds for them to get the gauntlet then literally nobody would have cared if he killed thanos right then and there. In fact Nebula and Drax likely would have actively helped Quill kill thanos
