France to Iran: don’t tell women what to wear.

Also France:

How are they going to enforce what’s an abaya and what’s a long-sleeved maxi dress? Will you need to show a receipt to prove that you bought it in Uniqlo?

Next episode: France just bans all clothing

I'm from Egypt and Egyptian Christian women wear the abaya. It's a cultural thing.

Why don’t you just implement school uniforms?? In the uk it’s already been a thing for ages

The problem with that law it’s that it doesn’t précise what is an abaya, so schools directors can refuse anyone who wears oversized clothes (are not allowed for arabs and Africans : dresses, large pants with a large t shirt, kimonos, a skirt with a large sweatshirt, to wear a headband)

Nothing defends a woman’s right to express themselves like telling them what to wear

Lets get this straight. Abayas are not JUST for muslim women and most definitely not a religious symbol. They are worn by arab women in general, whether muslim/christian or jew. So they have no right to not allow women to wear it, unless they are anti-arab which is discriminatory

Instead of upsetting everyone by banning things, perhaps a school uniform would be an appropriate measure instead. A uniform also ensures the clothing is appropriate for education and is safe to wear during school activities.

This isn't going to promote secularism among the youth.

This really shows the difference between French secularism and American secularism. Secularism in America is to allow all religions to practice equally without favoring one over the other. Secularism in France is to keep public spaces completely free of religion.

Absolutely. In fact to further this regime and make it effective, we must also ban religious names, no more Mary, John, Mohammed, Gabriel or Sarahs. Instead children must be named after fruit and vegetables. 😂

Secularism should be interpreted as the equal neutrality of the state toward all religions and non-religions, not the eradication of religious expression from public places. When it comes to freedom of/from religion, forcing people to do something and forcing people not to do something on state-owned property are equally authoritarian.

It's not even a religous garment because even arabs of other beliefs wear it too since it is actually a cultural dress

I'm not Muslim but I wear a lot of abaya like dresses.

This is so stupid because the abaya isn't even religious. It's more cultural instead. It just happens to be loose enough for Muslim women to wear it. Many of my non Muslim friends wear abayas because it is CULTURAL.

It's literally just cultural clothing.
