But let’s take a look at different markets over the past five presidential terms. Elections can be inflection points, though not always consistently.
Forex markets have shown volatility during election periods, but it’s rarely just about the vote itself. Obama’s 2008 election win came amid the Global Financial Crisis, which was already a volatile period.
If we zoom in further, some elections show significant volatility. This is the week of Trump’s 2016 win—the surprise result initially sent the S&P 500 down 5%, but it quickly rebounded and rallied over the next year.
