The Alexander Romance is an account of the life and adventures of Alexander the Great. It is sometimes attributed to Alexander's court historian Callisthenes, but he died before Alexander did, making it impossible for him to have written a full account of the king's life. Regardless of the author, the Alexander Romance proved to be wildly popular throughout the rest of classical antiquity and into the Medieval period. The work was translated into dozens of languages, and subject to multiple revisions and additions. There are versions of the Romance in meter which would have been accompanied by music, while others contain unique episodes of the great king's life not found elsewhere. For example, the Syriac version of the romance connects Alexander to the apocalyptic figures of Gog and Magog where Alexander prophesies the date at which the Hunnic tribes will conquer the west and usher in the biblical end of days.
