The word "dictator" may have negative connotations in today's English, but in the Roman Republic, it was the official title of a government office. Rome didn't always have a dictator. Rather, a dictator would be appointed by the Senate under extreme circumstances. Dictators were counted among Rome's cultural and moral leaders, expected to give up power after the crisis was over, or after a period of six months (whichever came first).

While most of Rome's dictators followed the precedent of abdication set by Cincinnatus, the late Republic saw the rise of someone who called himself, "Dictator Perpetuo" - "Dictator in Perpetuity." That someone was Julius Caesar. By refusing to give up power, he fundamentally changed Rome's governmental structure and paved the way for the imperial period that would rise out of the aftermath of his assassination.
