I enjoyed it immensely. Naito winning was the ceeam on the cake. Tsuji, Shota & Narita showing they were are the chosen musketeers going forward. Gabe Kidd kicked arse too. Henare had some belters. Shingos matches all made me smile.
Favourite matches were Tsuji/Shota time limit draw and Eddie/Shingo. Shingo/Henare was awesome too. Ospreay/Naito was amazing.

I watched the entire of the G1 from start to finish. And I will say that I didn’t know that this had 117 matches. This was my first G1 Climax tournament, so I was taking as I go. But here is my opinions:
The time limit is issue that I can understand why people didn’t like. I personally loved the 20 Minute Time Limit, it was an absolute joy watching it as I kept me on the edge of my seats as the clock was counting down. The only downside I have about is that the Draws in the tourney was very obvious to spot especially when we had the matches of Shota Umino, Ren Narita & Yota Tsuji. I will agree with you that some matches did deserve more time to flesh out which the time limit didn’t help.
The Booking Of A Block surprised me with Hikuleo winning 2nd place. I like Hikuleo, but Shota Umino could’ve had that. B Block was predictable, but fun. C Block was so much fun and it did have a unexpected ending. I did expect David Finlay in the Quarterfinals, but EVIL broke my heart beating Shingo. This made me a big fan of HENARE and his Headbutts are vicious especially in the Shingo Takagi match on Day 4. D Block could’ve gone either way and had made me laugh.
The Quarterfinals surprised me with EVIL beating SANADA. I do get tired of House Of Torture especially Dick Togo, but still surprising. The No Time Limit gave the wrestlers freedom which was great.
Naito’s two matches against Will Ospreay and Kazuchika Okada made me do the L•I•J roll call even though the tourney is over.

I think the G1 this year was pretty emblematic of NJPW’s recent approach to stuff. Which is namely get as many folks in these tournaments as you can especially to give some guys lighter scheduling so the tournament isn’t as grueling as it used to be, make a play at pushing new talent but sort of pull back at the last instance, but also occasionally have some of the highest highs of wrestling with certain stories and athletes.
NOAH and their equivalent tournament, the N1, is almost done and I would say it was a much more consistent tournament for quality but additionally, it doesn’t quite reach those highs of high for the drama or that certain magic the G1 has.
I don’t know what the right balance is for NJPW to get as much talent in this tournament as they can but also making sure the quality is up to snuff and their guys aren’t getting injured, but I hope they find it.

Yes, I think 32 people might be a bit much, but I really liked the 4 blocks with playoffs format. I think keeping the 4 blocks but limiting each one to 6 people, with only one from each block advancing like they did last year is the best format. Also, I really liked the 20 minute time limit, aside from making a time limit draw more of an option thus making the block harder to guess, I liked the sense of urgency and it also made me watch more matches that I otherwise wouldn't have watched, because it's less of a time investment. This is probably the first year that I watched all of YOSHI HASHI's matches.
