Castle Ptuj is often noted as one of the most magnificent castles in present-day Slovenia, with Ptuj being one of the most historically prominent settlements.

The castle stands on a hill, the area of which has been more-or-less continuously settled ever since the Neolithic. It's elevated strategic position at the Drava river made it a very defensible strongpoint.

The medieval fort was built in the 11th century, as an outpost of the Holy Roman Empire, meant for defending internal and external borders - against the Kingdom of Hungary, and later against the Turks.
Within, it stood on the border between the Archbishopric of Aquileia and the Archbishopric of Salzburg, that possessed it. The castle has been a home to castellans that spread Christendom, Germanic language and culture.

Today the castle is the home of a regional museum, with a large collection of old weapons and musical instruments (the most important being the roman tibia), as well as furnished interior depicting life and within the castle.
