Arcing is extremely dangerous. I watched a supposedly qualified PG&E controls tech disconnect a current transformer from a 115,000 volt line in our switchyard without first shorting the contacts. Fortunately for him it arced to the grounded line anchor frame instead of him. It burnt a 2โ€ hole through a 3/8โ€ thick galvanized beam before our generator breaker opened and the substation tripped. About 4000 people lost power. If it had arced to him instead, he would have been a smoking hole in the ground.

I work for a dno. For our 11kv network we have a safety distance of 0.8m plus 300mm from insulator. But for those who do not work with this stuff on a regular basis i would recommend staying much further away from it than that
