Ever imagine what life would be like with a sixth sense? Well that’s the reality for many animal species, including snakes. Pit Vipers use their eponymous ‘heat pits’ to scan their surroundings for temperature fluctuations, serving as a built-in radar system. Because we’re so dependent on our sense of sight, it’s difficult for us to comprehend an additional sensory plane. But these reptiles don’t just see heat in a manner similar to thermal radar vision, they likely ‘feel’ the three-dimensional changes (what we might call a gut feeling).

I would be very interested to know the estimated heat sensitivity of the labial pits on pythons, and on the boas on which they are present. My carpet pythons show no interest in food unless it is warm.
