Magadh was one of the earliest and strongest mahajanapada of India. The earliest reference to the Magadha people occurs in Atharveda, where they are found listed along with the Angas, Gandharas and Mujavats. It was located at the eastern Ganges plain (which is in present day Bihar state of Bharat), with Rajgriha (present day Rajgir, Bihar) as its capital. Rajgrih was initially known as Girivrij and later came to be known as so during the reign of Ajatashatru. The ancient kingdom of Magadha is heavily mentioned in Jain and Buddhist texts. It is also mentioned in the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Puranas. Gautama Buddha, lived much of his life in the kingdom of Magadha. He attained enlightenment in Bodh Gaya, gave his first sermon in Sarnath and the first Buddhist council was held in Rajgriha.
