Reading these comments is disheartening. Not brushing your teeth isn’t always about being lazy—mental health struggles can make even basic self-care overwhelming. I’ve experienced swollen gums from not brushing during depressive episodes, and it’s embarrassing when your struggles are visible. If you’re in a similar spot, here are some tips:
1. Apply baking soda directly to inflamed gums to help reduce bacteria.
2. Use mouthwash when brushing feels like too much, even twice a day if needed.
3. Like bentist said, brush and FLOSS when you can, especially before bed.
Let’s be kind and avoid judgment; everyone’s fighting battles we don’t see.

I hate to say this to the whole internet with strangers but i have this expect the gum is swollen on one only, the other gum are fine. I think i know the reason why is because two years ago i got depressed because of covid lockdown and moving away which took a toll of me. I rarely got out of bed, brush my teeth, took a bath, or ate
But in jan 2023, i started to take care of my body which took a lot of energy and motivation but it got better! Expect that i have this gum overgrown, but not covering my teeth. I dont know what im doing wrong with brushing my teeth since i also have braces on for 9 month's now

There's something i'd like to add : overgrown gum tissue isn't always caused by bad oral health, it can also be caused by some types of medication (like some anti-epileptics) but not only, and the aspect of the gum would be different. But that second one is VERY RARE
Some of my teachers generally make a difference between gingival hypertrophia and hyperplasia :
- hypertrophia is the increase in size of the cells, there's inflammation, the gum are red, very smooth and often bleed, and is generally associated with periodontitis (inflammation of the bone)
- hyperplasia is the increase in the number of cells, so it's an overgrowth of tissue, but healthy (no inflammation, no blood, the gum are pink and have an aspect like orange skin)
