Unless the circuit is used in a humid environment such as a washing machine, this is to prevent circuit copying and protect IP. It cannot be removed with regular solvents, and strong solvents run the risk of destroying the IC and PCB itself.

This is why there’s so much waste, it’s not waterproofing it’s just making sure your product cannot be repaired, I suggest using clear silicon instead of black acrylic or tar
