That's like a holy relic at this point. Please tell me this sits in a case and sometimes, late at night, you turn the lights low and just stare at it. With a good single malt and the Silmarillion playing softly in the background.

WOW, now that should almost belong in a museum. What a treasure you own Bridger.

I have a kind of sad story related to this printing. I used to work at a semi-big chain bookstore that accepted old books for store credit, and a lady brought this in along with a bunch of other books. No idea what she had, the dust jacket wasn't perfect but it was intact. I'll never forget seeing it, the cover compares the Hobbit to Alice in Wonderland, as if no one had ever heard of the Hobbit (which was the truth in this case).

Anyways, once we told the lady the value of what she had, she understandably took the book back. We expected that to happen. What we didn't expect to happen was for her to just walk out the door with the book in hand, no protection, while it was RAINING OUTSIDE! The sheer pain we all felt seeing that happen was immense. Glad to see at least someone is taking care of their copy!

Great copy of a great book! You probably know this, but the illustrations in the 1937 English first edition (which precedes this) were in black and white only. The second English printing used these color plates--and still came out before the first American--but the eagle plate that you show here did not make it into the English edition. Tolkien thought that was a shame, and I agree!

That's an amazing find! The story of its provenance and acquisition would also be interesting <hint, hint>.

I’m a fan of Tolkien’s artwork, and I have a version of The Hobbit with illustrations but it’s the green leatherette one from way later. I appreciate the antique books, I have a couple myself, mostly just to preserve them.

This is a stunning treasure! I have encountered fragile cover issues within collecting as well. I am curious about the facsimile cover was it on the book when you purchased it, or did you have someone like Juniper create it? I'm looking for an education on the best way to handle this as I love displaying beautiful books. Thank you, Bridger.

Is it true that the chapter Riddles in the Dark is different in the first edition than in the editions that were published after The Lord of the Rings was published?
