Secret Lair was really the start of the utter shitshow that is the current state of MTG. i will say though, I did cave and buy the Dr. Who Commander decks, mostly because my mom is a huge whovian

The lore really is just elevator music to accompany the cards at this point. Some years ago I might have recommended delving into it. But at this point don't bother, spend your time elsewhere. Hopefully your money too because WotC is utter shite.
