That could be the first hammerhead shark impression I've ever seen

The other reason for wanting good depth perception is if you live in the trees and need to judge distance accurately so you can jump or swing from branch to branch without falling. Primates have eyes on the front for that reason. They compensate for the narrow field of vision by living in groups and communicating about danger

Do not forget that much of the Hammerhead Sharks' depth perception is not purely visual---they have very acute electromagnetic sensory organs (called Ampullae of Lorenzini) to which their spatulate and wide bonnets allows for longer and more spread out tubules.

… I thought it had to do with the bio-electrical sensors underneath there head they use as detectors

That bunny is going to be eaten by a hammerhead shark if it's not careful!

they also have binocular vision above, below, ahead and behind themselves, alongside a large number of electroreceptors in the "hammer" that makes them very good at sensing hiding sea creatures.

Can't wait for the triangle head update.

As someone who's planning on studying these guys in the future, I can say it's also partly because having drill-shaped heads would cause several problems

I think there must be something more to this story. I mean.. why don't other forms of sharks have heads shaped like hammerheads? What is it about hammerheads that they need such good depth perception?

That's an adorable yet slightly intimidating "predatory animal" right there 😂

You just reminded me of when I wanted to use two periscopes to perceive depth at greater distances! Stick them out sideways in opposite directions, look through one with your right eye and one with your left and it effectively moves your eyes further apart.

Primates didn’t evolve binocular vision due to being predators, (they are not predators), it was evolved to better navigation in the trees where one needs to accurately judge the distance between one branch and another, otherwise they could miss the branch, fall, and die.

Well... Well you see, there are sword fish... And there are warhammer fish. Used to eliminate fish in heavy armor by blunt force. Makes sense?

In the case of humans, as with most apes, monkeys, and some rodents, eyes are in front mostly to handle moving around branches and life on trees in general. Even many herbivore animals that live on trees have forward facing eyes for this reason :)
