Historical note, grep comes from g/re/p, a command in ed that stands for 'global regular expression; print'. In ed, regular expressions stop at the first match by default, but prepending g to one lets you print all matching lines instead using the p command. Since ed is a line editor, this functionality does actually make sense as you might want to use a regex as a selection for where you want to insert text or whatever, or you might want to simply replace every instance of a word. Inserting or deleting lines is more common, so that's why single matches are the default. Now you know!

Actually Select-String is the powershell grep. Findstr is the old legacy cmd equivalent.

find and findstr existed on Windows before powershell, although I still prefer grep. The powershell cmdlet is select-string.
