season 1 didnt JUST pay off everything, the beginning of the story made little effort to build a story to draw you in for season 2. the main conflict wasn't the gates of the threat of the world's destruction, it was the MC clearing his name of false charges and proving he was the best of the heroes in basically every way partially out of spite
season two is basically "i guess we still need to save the world" content until they walk into the next gripping plot point which doesn't happen for a while. that's the real problem, Shield Hero didn't make saving the world as significantly tied to the story early on as it should've but people like the story and characters enough that they were/are willing to wade through months of nothing till the story hits its stride again

I feel like people misunderstood the the first arc for the entire story. His first arc was making people understand heās not a villain heās actually an OK person and he wasnāt guilty of anything he was framed for.
The second arc was going to the second set of heroes world, and understanding their position in all of this, and gaining an appreciation for them, rather than just seeing them as enemies
The third arc is about his cursed series, powers, or whatever theyāre called and how the other heroes are discovering it, and becoming extremely fucking warped, and basically villains, so he hast to go around and teach them not to do that because heās the most experienced with it, and understands the power
The reason this is the problem is people got attached to the āhated heroā thing that was going on in the first season and now they donāt wanna story about the world heās in they want a story about him suffering

Just started season 2 and it definitely got weird with him having nothing but girls in his team making them his slaves and stuff but itās too late to stop the grind now

My friend told me that the third season is okay but after the second season I honestly don't even want to watch it. I hate to say that too because the second season had a lot of really cool stuff in it that I really liked but then the actual story behind it was just really dumb

So I hated the second season until I went back. Preparing to watch the third season and watch the first season and the second season back-to-back when I did that. It felt so much cleaner. It was so nice. It was great really and I think the reason for that is because when you go to the next season when anime most of the time, there's some type of timescape, even if it's a few months by season, 2 was literally just a continuation of season one.

Itās also they have no clear goal in mind anymore, they keep talking about this next big disaster just waiting to happen meanwhile the MC and His group goes off to do something else and then the remaining āheroesā are woefully unprepared for it

Heroes once deceive and redeemed became deceive again. They repeat the pattern and it sucks, the fan service is just there for "Service".

Had they at least kept the core of his struggle, the struggle of acceptance or vengeance I think the show would have been more memorable but it just took an entirely different turn that a lot of people got turned off from what it became.
