Hiranyakaship wanted everyone to worship him. He married his wife (i dont know her name) who was a devotee of lord vishnu. Then she had a son who was like his mother. His name was prahlad devotee of vishnu. Hiranyakaship grew angry after knowing this. He kept on trying to kill his own son. He asked his sister holika for help. She had a boon from god that she would never burn in fire but if she used it to do any bad things she would burn. Holika came up with a plan that she would sit in the fire and make prahlad sit in her lap. Then she burnt to death cause of the boon. Hiranyakaship grew angry and asked prahlad if there is god everywhere, then prahlad said yes. Then hiranyakaship asked if there is god in this hot stone prahlad still said yes. Then he asked prahlad if there god then hug it. Then prahlad hugged the hot stone,the avatar of vishnu,Narasimh(head of lion) came out of the stone then killed hiranyakaship. On account of holikas death the light a fire so all the sins get washed away (dhuleti) . The next day of holikas death holi is celebrated.
