When you spend all day doing what you HAVE to do, staying up may be the only time that you have to do what you WANT to do 😕. I really wish sleep was optional

Sleep is important for mammals and most other species. But sleep makes us vulnarable. This is why it is very hard to fall asleep if you feel stressed or unsafe. And why you can decide to put it off. Mammals can use this power to sleep in turns for safety. Humans make bad sleep decisions. Maybe bc most of us hardly ever feel unsafe.
The backup system is that if you stay up long enough it will get harder and harder to stay awake. And you will, most likely, fall asleep before you die of sleep deprivation.

I'm not at all convinced that humans are the only species that procrastinates going to sleep. I'd be willing to bet a pretty good chunk of change that if we looked for it properly, we'd be able to see the same behaviors in at least one or two other great apes.

I deprive myself of sleep by working rotating 12 hour shifts 7 days a week. Most the time I don't know what day it is.

No apparent reason is BS. The reason is always apparent, and it directly results from being creatures with higher order thinking. We deprive ourselves of sleep for novelty, or for fear of bad dreams, or a million other individualistic reasons

Humanity is also the only species that understands that time spent sleeping is time spent not experiencing the life that will all too soon be ending. With an understanding of mortality comes a desire to maximize conscious life.

i mean, staying up doesnt really mean youre sleep depriving since youre gonna get your sleep when you do fall asleep, unless you also wake urself up after 5 hours forcefully thru an alarm clock. and that most likely happens because of work and money.

It’s my belief that a lot of our modern health issues we deal with today are caused by not getting enough sleep, and also using stimulants to make our tired mind and body perform at a level it otherwise couldn’t.

I stay up rediculously "late" (usually after sunrise) mostly because im literally nocturnal (it's genetic, you can look it up lol) but also in part because I'm just not ready for it to be tomorrow yet.

Human beings are the only animal that does LOTS of strange things. We deprive ourselves of sleep because we feel that time could be better used doing something else. It's a strange curse that we have to make ourselves completely unconscious and vulnerable for ONE THIRD OF OUR ENTIRE LIVES!
