Horvat Uza was a fortress in the 7th and 6th centuries - when archaeologists excavated it they found ostraca. One of those ostraca was written in Edomite. This artifact gives some interesting context to passages like the book of Obadiah. #shorts #archaeology #bible #biblicalarchaeology #obadiah #edom #edomites

I had a couple of questions. First, the letters shown in the video are the same as the paleo-Hebrew letters before the Babylonian captivity. How do we know the Edomites language was different from the Israelites with this artifact when they used the same letters as the Israelite language at that time? Second, if Jacob and Esau who were twins grew up in the same household speaking Hebrew, and there were periods of time when Israel controled Edom from the time of king David to King Jehoram, how or when would they have developed a separate language from the Israelites?

As an Arabic speaker myself, I was pleased to find out how intelligible the Edomite/Idumean language is with Arabic. It’s actually closer to Arabic than it is to Hebrew—far closer, in fact.

I wonder if there's a way to decipher the Edomite script, and to understand the language and how similar it is to Hebrew.
