Rights are there to protect those people and their heritage so that they have the same freedoms as others, and in their own country too. Rhetorical question: Would you say I get “special” treatment for being legally blind and owning a guide dog? And does someone in a wheelchair get “special” treatment for needing to use elevators and ramps to have access to places they can’t otherwise get to? It doesn’t mean that we get special privileges because we’re better than everyone else, it simply means we all have a right to what we need and the same opportunities as everyone else.
