The original movie is a masterclass in acting, music, and setting. A variety of jokes are present throughout the movie. The writing is solid enough that the acting and musical numbers can carry it through its shaky characters, subtext, and theming.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is not an attempt to remake the movie, but rather an adaptation of the book. The screenwriter didnât even watch Willy Wonka until after he had finished writing the script for Charlie and the Chocolate factory. That being said people going to watch the movie and expecting a remake of the original movie will be very dissatisfied. I like the characters a lot better in the new film (except Uncle Joe and Willy) because they generally have much more to say about their themes. As an example TV Mike now shows why TV can be bad, (escapism and disconnection from reality leading to dissonant behaviors) instead of the original where weâre just told TV is bad by the Oompa Loompas. That being said Uncle Joe just kind of exists and Willyâs characterization has less coherency. Because the movie took a darker tone it should have had a darker ending to match, but it didnât. Thatâs fine but then there needs to be character development throughout the movie if it wants to have a happy ending. For some unholy reason they smashed all Wonkaâs character development into the third act after the climax of Charlieâs story. I donât know why this happened or who thought it was a good idea but the result is an extremely rushed third act trying to explore childhood trauma and the healing journey in less than 30 minutes.
All that being said I like the original Willy Wonka better because itâs an easier watch, but I like the new one because it doubles down and examines themes and problems it brings up more explicitly. Itâs not a bad movie by any means.

I LOVED the old one as a kid more than the Burton one as it genuinely felt like it appealed to 7 year old me more then the Burton one. Like the original one has a more childlike whimsical quality to it that feels like it appeals more to kids than the Burton one which is really just dark and depressing like the Burton one isnât bad donât get me wrong, but itâs not a feel good movie itâs not the kind of movie that you wanna watch if you want to feel good and happy. Itâs not the kind of movie appropriate for kids unlike the classic version(minus the tunnel scene which didnât scare me personally as a kid lol) also the parents were super hilarious too! Mrs. Teavee, Sam Beauregarde(I gOt a bLuEbErRy foR a dAuGhTeR!), and Mr Salt were over the top with their reactions but in the remake the parents are dull and washed out too.

Unpopular opinion, then no one has the guts to say: the original Charlie and chocolate factory is more psychotic and less like the original book and the new one. The new one had every exact dialogue words, characters inside of the book- including the minor characters. The reason why I think that the newer one is a lot more better than the originalâŠ

I always thought they were both good. Obviously the original Gene Wilder one is the best but i really like Tim Burton and especially Johnny Depp. I'll watch either on any given day and be just as happy.
Also Y'all gotta give Deep Roy some fuckin credit. Can you imagine how difficult it mustve been to do a billion takes of one dance standing slightly to the left each time?

Tim Burtons wonka was trash. I donât care if it was accurate to the book.
