Singapore was a part of the Federation of Malaya, which gained independence from British colonial rule in 1957. In 1963, Singapore merged with Malaya, Sabah, and Sarawak to form Malaysia.
On August 9, 1965, the Malaysian Parliament voted to expel Singapore from the federation, citing "irreconcilable differences" between the two governments. Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew was not consulted beforehand and was reportedly surprised by the decision.
Singapore thus became an independent nation without actively seeking it, with Lee Kuan Yew declaring independence in a televised address on August 9, 1965.
