It also forces your liver to work very hard digesting your food once you do get to sleep (when it should be repairing). That is the #1 cause of ageing related diseases, wearing out your organs, especially the liver.
According to my endocrinologist it's also good to have a breakfast bar next to the bed, so that your liver isn't forced to generate a ton of glucose when you wake (which gives you energy). Anything you can do to make your liver not work so hard will make you a lot healthier.

So you just answered the question. Eating late doesn't make you gain weight, eating more calories does.
