There are many mysteries surrounding the month of Elul, which can be especially challenging. One such mystery is the absence of any mention of Rosh Chodesh in the Rosh Hashanah liturgy. According to the Talmud, this omission is intentional. As we approach the Day of Judgment, when Jews are in need of extra merit, it seems the usual source of merit is no longer available. Normally, on Rosh Chodesh, the gates of heaven open, offering an opportunity for divine favor. However, on Rosh Hashanah, these gates remain closed, leaving us seemingly vulnerable to HaShem’s judgment.
Yet, Jews are not left entirely defenseless. Although the "special monthly" window of merit is closed, Israel has another powerful tool—the shofar. Blowing the shofar renews our connection with HaShem, just as we would on Rosh Chodesh:
“Blow the horn on the new moon, on the full moon for our feast day” (Psalms 81:4).
Even when this window is hidden, we must rely on HaShem’s Divine Attributes of Mercy. It is this mercy, rather than strict justice, that ensures our survival during this critical time.
