Depends what they determine best footballer to be. If it’s the player with the highest technical skills Rodri shouldn’t win. If it’s the most indispensable player then maybe he should. What’s sad is that it’s often given to the player who won the most trophies that year which is sad because it makes the award more or less redundant because that’s what the trophy(s) signify.

He’s completely right. The individual talent is probably the lowest it’s been since most of us were born.
Hopefully it’s just a transition because the best players now are all young and growing into that level while the big name stars are approaching retirement. There’s not many in between it’s weird.

Hard disagree with this opinion. Ballon d'Or is too biased towards forwards and attacking midfielders. They are often the best players but not always, and they get too many votes in the years where they truly aren't. Also if Rodri were to win he definitely wouldn't be the first midfielder or even holding mid to win it. If anything, it's a crying shame that some defenders, midfielders and goalkeepers never won it. Like it just feels mad that players like Neuer, Buffon, Maldini, Xavi and others never won one (even though obviously they faced insane competition). Xavi maybe not, but there were definitely years where Neuer, Buffon and Maldini were clearly the best players on the pitch for their team.

He’s not saying he shouldn’t win it.
What I believe he is saying is that football has become so robotic that no/very few forward players have the freedom to attack 1v1 or attackers play with creativity.
Now, they work teams by overloads and team play instead of the individual talent a forward player can bring.
He’s saying football is more robotic now and less individual talent you can get from a wide/attacking player.
