58 years ago on June 5th, 1967, the Six-Day War began. Although Israel had defeated the surrounding Arab nations 19 years earlier, conflicts between the countries never truly ended. Tensions with Egypt, Syria, and Jordan had been rising for years—but when Egyptian President Nasser expelled UN peacekeepers, blockaded Israeli ships, and mobilized his troops, full-out war was looming. Israel, surrounded and outnumbered, struck first. In a surprise air assault, they destroyed over 300 Egyptian aircraft in mere hours. Now with total air superiority, they launched tanks and infantry into Sinai and Gaza, completely overwhelming and pushing Egyptian forces out. Meanwhile, Jordan and Syria launched attacks from the east and north. But Israel’s superior coordination and intelligence flipped the odds. With rapid airstrikes and swift tank attacks, they were able to capture East Jerusalem and the West Bank from Jordan while also storming the Syrian-held Golan Heights. In just six days, Israel had defeated three major Arab nations and taken control of a vast amount of new territory.
