I don’t know if this is common knowledge or not but people used to sniff tobacco they way they do other substances. During a stage performance, if an audience member was bored, they would snuff their tobacco, which would cause them to sneeze. You could tell how interested the audience was by how many people were sneezing. Nothing to sneeze at is a saying that means “It’s interesting” because the audience doesn’t feel the need to entertain themselves by using their tobacco and thus resulting in sneezing.
