They can get away with it because you will pay for it.

The answer to any “why is {airline thing} so bad” is, 100% of the time, without fail, “because the trains aren’t fast enough.”

More reasons why people book business class in Europe:
1. it is not 3 times more expensive
2. Business class tickets are the only tickets that are available as fully refundable flex tickets
3. More luggage included - paying for economy + 1 extra suitcase can be more expensive than a business ticket
4. Lounge access included

Also priority services at the airport and lounge access

The main reason is also that the amount of business seats can be changed by simply moving the curtain. This makes it easier for airlines to change the offer to what is being bought. On some destinations they constantly sell 20 business seats while on others they sell 4-8. This way they can always adapt.

This is quite a surprising piece because US internal carriers call it “First”. And first is a slightly larger seat, a substandard food offering and a plastic cup. I have flown United “First’ and American ‘First’ and both are lacking. At least on BA, Swiss, Lufthansa etc. you get a meal and a proper glass…. Please give ALL the facts…

I dunno, I flew on an Asia-based airline in basic economy and it was a great experience. You eat what is essentially first class food on American-based airlines without the cost. I'm talking seafood and healthy meals, not the dry ham sandwich on United. It'# comfortable, they give you great amenities and lots of snacks, with the nicest flight attendants ever. Granted, it was a long-haul flight, but even then, all the more reason to like this Asia-based airline over the dumpster fire that is American-based airlines. No clue about European ones though.

Its ok, the middle seat blocked off does give you some space from whoever is at the window or aisle, service is pretty good usually. They're not usually very long flights within Europe so lots of seat space isn't such a big deal.

I’m flying BA business to Croatia in August. When my mum told me I got all excited until I saw the seats 😢

Many flights in Europe are just an hour long or two. So the seat is still okay for such distance and what matters most is the premium service on board. I.e. some incredible food and beverage options. Additionally you get lounge access at the airport, priority boarding and extra luggage.
So it’s really a matter of perspective.

It is simply Europeans have a different view of business class for short haul (under 3 hours and typically under 2), which applies to most travel across Europe. One does not need a chair that reclines into a bed for such short journeys.

The flights are usually short within Europe. Most people don't need business class for short flights.

I was surprised at the level of comfort and would consider again, even though it wasn't to the standard of other regions.

A big reason why it's done this was though is economics. Selling more business class seats than usual? Or have to cancel a flight and move people to another? The business class section can be expanded or contracted as desired.

Mayyybe not everyone finds extreme luxury all too necessary?

You normally get a better business class experience if you fly long haul, even with European airlines.

Only at Continental flights… at intercontinental flight are business class from European airlines way better than Americans

Agreed, but it does get you lounge access. Depending on the airport it can be worth the ‘cheap’ upgrade.

Short flights so people don't particularly care about space, you get lounge, express security, board and disembark first, flexible tickets, extra baggage, etc. Using regular seats allows the cabin to be resized which makes for better pricing, well that's the theory.

KLM 737-800 business class flight from AMS to CPH:

Same legroom if not on 1st row, no IFE, Blocked middle seat, full meal plus drinks, slightly more attention from staff.

Other than that, it’s pretty much economy.
