On September 19, 1957, history was made when the United States detonated its first-ever underground nuclear explosion in Nevada. Known as Project 57, this event was part of the ongoing effort during the Cold War to develop safer methods of nuclear testing. Unlike previous atmospheric tests, this explosion was contained underground, reducing radioactive fallout and marking a major shift in nuclear weapons development.

The test, code-named Rainier, had a force equivalent to 1.7 kilotons of TNT.
