Forget the precision of a machine shop. Anyone who is handy already owns these basic tools and it works fairly well.

If you really needed that type of precision you should just not use a measure tape. Just twist the callipers 45°

This was the most complicated way to measure a round diameter. You talk about precision but have to balance two rulers and a measuring tape. All you needed to do was angel the calipers placing the flat parallel sides and you got your measurement. I am a CNC machinist that is what I do all day every day.

I’m not sure what the use of the tape measure was. When you lined your combination square atop of your framing square it has the measurements on it.

Why not just measure the top with the tape and ignore the squares.

Making More work for yourself.

Hook the tape measure, swing it a little left and right - largest measure is it.

If you have 1 square you can do this with a pencil. Mark the inside of a framing square in both directions, going past the approximate diameter. Rotate the square 90° so it lines up with only 1 line. The other line will indicate the diameter on the square.

If you don't have a square, trace the circle onto a piece of paper. Fold the paper so you have a perfect half-circle when holding up to the light. Unfold and measure that fold line.

That’s one way to do it. I just take one more step and use my ruler to measure my tape to measure my framing square

I married a large, round object, can I still use this method of measure?

Measure the ID and add 2 x Wall thickness. Job done.

Hold the calipers at an angle, and measure the diameter. Easy peasy. And accurate to .001".

This just reminded me I need to get a set of T gauges 🤔

|

@krislink1761

Or just use the framing square and skip the tape measure. You weren't going to get a accurate measurement from either one. I would have stuck with the calipers in this situation

I’m sure this guy using a tool that’s too small extends outside of his toolbox. 😂😂

We have 4 feet micrometer, 10 feet callipers, and for anything larger we have pi tape.
