• From July 2022 through January 2023, she was repeatedly told she had fibroids, delaying proper diagnosis.
• It wasn't until February 2023 that an oncologist diagnosed her with stage 3 cervical cancer after a biopsy.
• Nearly 9 months after her initial misdiagnosis, Jessica passed away, leaving behind her husband of 12 years and two children.

Cervical cancer starts with abnormal cell growth in the cervix, the narrow passage connecting the uterus and vagina. While the most common cause is HPV, a preventable virus, delayed diagnosis can be catastrophic, as Jessica's story tragically illustrates. The good news is that HPV is preventable. There is an HPV vaccine that is highly effective.

Here are critical things every woman should know about cervical cancer:

• The HPV vaccine is the best way to prevent cervical cancer - It can also prevent anal cancer, penile cancer, throat cancer, vaginal cancer
• It prevents more than 90% of cancers attributable to HPV
• Since the introduction of the HPV vaccine in 2006, infections with high-risk strains have decreased by 88% in teens and 81% in young adult women.
• The HPV vaccine is recommended between the ages of 9 and 26 and even up to age 45 plus depending on your doctor's recommendations.

Her loved ones remain in our thoughts during this difficult time.

I had no symptoms at all...at 42 i had gastric bypass. Lost 79kgs. Finally went for skin removal and tummy tuc at 52. I started bleeding. I kept raising it and surgeon said they dont go there. 6 weeks later I told him it hasnt stopped. He finally sent me for a sonar. They said I need a gynae asap. Gynae did biopsy and said shed see me in a week. Two days later she called me to say I need a full hysterectomy asap. Still recovering from an abdomnioplasty i had to undergo a full hysterectomy with oopherectomy. They sent it off for a biopsy. Six weeks later turns out I had stage 1B cancer and 3/4 of my uterus was malignant. Had I not insisted someone see whats wrong i wouldnt be typing this today. I wouldnt be here. Its a silent killer. Listen to your body. It does speak to you. I always wonder how long it was there for and growing. No one picked up anything and also wonder if it was a reason I couldnt have children. Everyone talks about breast cancer globally but very little said about cervical or endometrial cancer. Stand up for yourself. Fight to be heard and dont stop till you are. Im in South Africa and I was fortunate to firstly listen but also to have been heard and it was actioned asap.

We need more education and awareness of HPV. Surprisingly many people are uneducated and unaware of this virus. So young. So sad.🙏🏾
