Right after it happened, in the flood of negative comments on the HBO forum, Marty Scorsese posted that he understood the meaning to be we were given access to this story, these lives, and the story is going on, but the window to our view of it has been slammed shut. I think it was about the only sympathetic post, and it was very thoughtful.
It's also what it sounds like Chase is saying here, and it's cool to know Scorsese was on his same wavelength even within a few minutes after it happened.

The ending was brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. The bell the bell the bell. I always think about Meadow coming in to see that her father’s bloody death. She was the hope of the family continuing in legitimacy, and this traumatic event would have driven her to harden a very pure motivation in her life work

The ending to “The Sopranos” will always be one of the best! When you really sit down & think about the lyrics of the song Journey “Don’t stop Believing” & the tension in the diner then the black screen it’s chef’s kiss perfect! You can literally make your own ending but if you watched the show correctly everybody know Tony Soprano was murdered by the guy in the “Members Only” Jacket as Meadow was walking in & by not seeing it, I swear that makes it even worst cause you just imagine Tony being shot in the side of his head as AJ, Carmela, & Meadow looks on while the song still playing..”On & On & On” 🎵🎶 wow such a perfect endin

no amount of further speculation will ever trump the very real fact that Tony soprano DID in fact get his in the end. But that’s just the genius of David chase. To not only leave the audience wondering for decades even after the show has ended, but to kill off the shows main character (entire story as a whole) by ending it the way many of the protagonists have ended others lives. Quick and swiftly. Never seeing it coming

The truth is, the audience got whacked. And you never even saw it coming.
