If they'd aimed Demon Slayer towards the seinen genre, it probably would have been just fine to keep Tanjiro's original concept as is. I would have liked to see the original story animated. I think what marketers often forget is that, with the field oversaturated with action-packed, comedic shounen, a lot of people love to see a nitty-gritty one every now and then if done tastefully.

I’ve always loved Tanjiro’s character. It shows that kindness is not weakness, and that you can battle your demons while being perfectly kind and caring for others. Kinda inspiring imo

Personally I think him being overly nice, while annoying at times, is a nice touch compared to the rest of the story. Instead of him being revengeful in a dark world, he’s more seen as a beacon of pure light despite everything around him. Corny as that may sound I think it’s fitting and what truly makes him the main character, not just his strength

In fairness, Tanjiro was clearly inspired (at least partially) by the ultimate gentleman, Jonathan Joestar.

I usually don't like "too perfect" characters but idk, Tanjiro just hits the right notes. He's just so likeable. I guess the fact that he works hard for everything he has is the deciding factor.

Part of why I don't mind Tanjiro as an MC is that he's in stark contrast with the brutal world around him. On top of that, his kindness is a plot device that allows villains that may not have been villains if the world were different to show that more human side of them. Just like Natsu in Fairy Tail making friends with everyone and making them tertiary protagonists, Tanjiro is the in we need for certain people, even if it's only for a bit. His genuine nature also makes his attempts to fight very moving, especially when coupled with just how hard KnY can sometimes go on its characters. I also appreciate that he doesn't know much so it feels natural that we're learning some things alongside him!

I used to get teased a lot for liking Demon Slayer as much as I did, but having a relatively simple story and a non-problematic protagonist like Tanjiro made enjoying the series remarkably easy, which was the main selling point for me.

Tanjiro is one of my fav protags tho, he doesn’t feel “too perfect” he just seems like a genuinely nice person, which has its strengths and weaknesses

I actually like how balanced Demon Slayer is. It is not dark enough to be a seinen series and it is not bright enough to even recommend it to a child. It has a lot of childish humor (that's sometimes cringe & sometimes actually funny) & the generic power of teamwork. It also has multiple wholesome scenes that may make one smile (it happened to me). But it also has a lot of disturbing imagery, extremely dark moments, several scenes packed with violence & gore, most of the characters dying and just straight up depressing. I also like how they executed this balance; There is no doubt that Demon Slayer is a really tragic & depressing story for the most part, but they chose the most lighthearted, hopeful & kindest person with childish humor as the main protagonist to lighten up the depressing mood of the story. If the story had followed characters like Sanemi, Giyu, Gyomei, Tengen, Genya, ect. as the main protagonist, the story would easily be either in the dark shonen trio or a seinen series. This type of dark/bright balanced series is what I'm into.

I think Tanjiro feels like a breath of fresh air in anime. He is such a great role model and there are things he does that are very inspiring

The version we all know of tanjiro was what made the show shine, I can’t imagine how the show would have been in terms of relationships with the hashira/trainees/friends if he had this attitude though I would like to see that version too 😅

Tanjiro is just an innocent kid trying to find a cure for his sister and wanting to kill the demon king which is his main goal. He's innocent and knows that demons WERE people too... and he hits them where it most hurts not only physically but emotionally that way they die peacefully.

It feels strange that some people outright hate tanjiro. Probably the fact that tanjro is a kind and forgiving person that causes people to realize that we the audience are not as strong/kind/forgiving to the people around us.

i truly am so charmed by Tanjiro and it's a major reason why i started watching the show, because I heard people gushing about how sweet he is. (and by people i mean Jacob Drawfee)

I feel like a lot of people don't really understand the overall design of t a n j i r o. Because his main struggle isn't with some demonic entity offering him power in exchange for darkness in his heart. He genuinely would love to help everybody. He would happily save all the demons that he's ever fought and killed. And his great struggle is coming to terms with that they cannot be saved, the only punishment the only Justice that he can deliver on to their victims, is to kill the demon. And he understands that all of these demons were victims of somebody else. It's why we get to see it the sad horrific details that led to these people turning into demons in the first place. Because every demon that he has to kill is the same as killing his sister, he understands that had somebody else been there for them when they turned had somebody given them a chance they could have all turned out like her. Then they are suffering from a sickness and a disease that nobody treated and now they have to die. The only real villain in the story was a victim of no one's actions but his own. He ended up the way he is because of the things that he did. And he continues to suffer because of the choices he has made. That's what makes them such a great villain and hero hair. I also think that their motivations are beautifully mirrored in each other. All our main villain wants to do is kill and absorb his sister so that way he can become this perfect being free of any flaws without any way for someone to stop him. All our heroes ones is to save his sister so that she can have a perfectly normal flawed human life, and the only way to do that is to kill our villain. One is entirely selfish the other is entirely self less. It's a great dichotomy to witness it's amazing storytelling and that's why it's as popular as it is. A villain that is that evil deserves a hero that is his polar opposite.

I like silent protagonists. Dororo for example. Dude didn't even get the ability to speak for a good long time.

Actually! It's because Tanjiro is such a nice guy that I like him so much. To me, he's like an ideal of positive masculinity and if I were a man, I would love to be like him.

Holy crap he was a one armed samurai?! That would’ve been dope to see him at least as a side character in the main manga. Although tengen’s new form probably took some inspiration from him 😂
