Making a colorful light show comes down to oil and water - learn all about the science below!

Why don’t oil and water mix?
Water molecules attract each other and stick together, and only mix with other materials that do the same. Oil molecules, on the other hand, don’t stick to each other quite as much, and only mix with liquids that behave like they do. When water and oil combine they separate due to their molecular structure, creating swirling blobs or completely dividing into two distinct layers!

How did we make it a light show?
We actually took inspiration from the 1960s! Back then, people would set a clear dish with colored water and oil on top of an overhead projector. We decided to make it mechanical and give more opportunities for color-mixing and swirling patterns by allowing the dishes to stack on top of each other and rock back and forth as the light shines through!

I never thought of that, but it's actually a pretty good idea! But what part did you use to make the top part tilt?
