Throughout the cycle of each stroke every muscle needs to both have its moment of relaxation and power, from the hands, wrists, forearms, upper arms to the feet. The breathing is fundamental: breathe out smoothly through the nose completely. I inhale every three strokes. It’s surprising how little oxygen/air is needed so there’s no need to fill up with air. The body needs to be floating then to aquaplane as much as possible. Keep the body as narrow and shallow as possible. The trick is to have graceful flow like tai chi chuan and the giveaway is the bubbles underwater. You do practice a round of tai chi before swimming don’t you??? The more relaxed the torso is the easier it is. The tempo needs to be consistent from the start to the finish, ramping it up to faster to finish on a high.
