The wealth of the 1% in the US is truly staggering, but it's still no match for the wealth of the Federal Government. It would take a team of the twenty richest people in the country pooling their resources to match the operating budget of the US. This is not the case in Mexico, where El Chapo Guzman can personally rival the budget of the Mexican government. That means the situation in Mexico right now closely resembles the situation of the Late Roman Republic when wealthy magnates could and did fund their own personal armies that were a match for the types of forces the Roman Senate could field. Marcus Licinius Crassus made his fortune in real estate speculation, mining, and slave trading. His personal fortune was equivalent to the wealth of the Republic. So when he wanted military glory, he went out and bought it.

Crassus also happened to own a large amount of property in Rome (some estimates say half, other a third but it was a lot either way), and his estate (those properties, any slaves he owned and all money as well as any material wealth) was goddam huge. my guy was loaded.
