Artificially relic’d guitars are the participation trophy for guitar collectors.

I don’t want to pay for the extra labor of scratching my guitar.

Next time I buy a new car I’m going to ask the dealer if they can relic it for me. Put a chip in the windshield, add some fake rust around the wheel wells, and make the interior smell like fast food. I’ll pay extra for that.

I have not paid extra but definitely purchased some relic guitars. I guess it has improved my will to play because it is ā€œalready beat upā€. Yeah it’s a stupid thing. I can’t help my brain. I have some fantastic guitars which are in cases and babied around, while the relics get played and played without worry. I don’t regret any guitar purchase. I also like the feel of a WELL reliced neck and body, but key here is well reliced and not from a factory. I support a small builder who makes fantastic guitars and relics them as his own choice.

If someone knows what they are paying for, then it’s just a choice, and not stupid.
We would all happily go buy a sports car, even though we’re not racing drivers, or have the skill to drive it properly. And no one says ā€œyou have to earn your wheelsā€.
This controversy is as much about the ego of the detractors, that want to feel superior, as it is the person wanting to pose a bit with relic guitar.
Master Build level luthiers do relics, so it’s filling the gap in the market for older guitar players, that couldn’t afford their dream guitar when they were a kid.
It’s a scam as much as the racing car market. Those aren’t need those either, there’s no chance to use them properly, and no skill set to drive one well enough.
Why isn’t that niche market called a scam?

It's a style and it's about taste. I approve. People are free to spend money on that if they want.

Ola Englund bought a reliced Strat a while ago and if I remember correctly he said that it was a really comfortable guitar to play. I can see how a warn down neck would feel nice. I think it reminds people of vintage guitars without having a vintage price tag on it. If it’s not for comfort then it’s a hipster thing for a lower price.

No!!! If I want a reliced guitar, I’ll do it my damn self, the old fashion way.

I remember when relic guitars first started appearing on the market. A friend of mine spent the way part of Ā£3000 on a fender relic when a USA standard back then was about Ā£900! Each to there own, but I didn’t get them then and I don’t get them now!!!! If you want a relived guitar, play the ones you own more!!! šŸ˜…

I dont think its a scam because they can't paint a guitar. I think it's a scam because they take a (potentially) l nice guitar and jack up the price 150% to make it look like its been beat to shit. I personally like my guitars to look like they've been taken care of. I'm not a doctor or lawyer that can afford a $15,000 wall ornament though.

Pure stupidity to pay a lot extra, just to have the finish peeling off!!

My mate spent £200 getting a Gibson standard reliced. A two grand guitar.
I said he was mad.
He said that he had also spent £200 on getting his epiphone reliced. A £500 guitar.

Madness.

As long as it stays in tune, plays comfortably and will make you pick it up when you wanna play something, that's all that matters, relic'd or not i don't care

there is something to be said about a well worn-in/broken-in baseball glove for instance, that's basically what the "light relicing" is. It's just s much more personal when youdo it yourself. Oil it, play ball, and throw it under the mattress lol

I used to work at Guitar Center. Being a store full of musicians serving other musicians, we always had various reasons to talk trash about customers (and of course, each other). But no trash talking session was as store-wide and long lasting as the one that began moments after some dude walked out of our store with his $20k Eric Clapton Strat replica. I still get a chuckle out of it all these years later lmao.

I personally own one distressed guitar and if I'm not mistaken, LTD didn't paint it to be that way, it's essentially a vinyl over a natural finish with holes and whatnot already added.

I did naturally relic my starter guitar and actually had a lot of fun doing it and the results look awesome. Yes the wear isn't natural but it did add some uniqueness to it.

The only relic I'd personally pay big money for would be the Gibson Custom Shop John Sykes Les Paul because I think the relic job on that looks incredible. Otherwise I'd agree it's kind of a waste of time. Either do the relic job yourself or wear it out naturally through use

I think there is a place for relic'd guitars, but it's not my cup of tea. I'd rather buy a new guitar in pristine condition, and relic it myself through years of playing. Relic'ing seems a bit like cheating to me lol

I relic mine the old fashioned way. I fuck up when handling and working on them.

I used to think relicing was really stupid. I still think ā€œpaying extraā€ for relicing is stupid. But someone pointed out to me that if you buy a higher tier reliced guitar, you never really have to worry much about dinging it, which is always one of my biggest worries about owning an expensive guitar. The little dings or scrapes won’t take away from the value of it, if you sell.

Also important to note, as I understand it, the sale of new factory reliced guitars originally started with people wanting guitars that felt broken in (specifically the necks) and not stiff feeling, as it’s generally more comfortable to play a guitar that’s been played for years.

Not completely by design, but I’m about to get my first reliced guitar, an SBS vs200 (a jazzmaster with a Floyd). Reliced finishes were the only color/paint option they make currently. I think the blue and white reliced paint jobs they have don’t look too bad. Definitely looking forward to that soft flat finish-feeling body and not having to worry about dings.
